Farm Animals

Farm Animal: Cow Lying Time and Welfare

Cattle need to lie down for extended periods each day, and systems that restrict lying time cause welfare problems from fatigue and lameness.

Key Facts

Dairy cows should lie down 10-14 hours per day for optimal welfare
Lying time is reduced by overcrowding, poor cubicle design and lameness
Overstocking forces cows to stand for extended periods causing hoof problems
Concrete surfaces without sufficient rubber matting cause discomfort and leg injuries
Pasture access allows natural lying patterns on soft ground

Welfare Considerations

Insufficient lying time causes cumulative physical welfare harm through fatigue, hoof wear and musculoskeletal stress. Cows pushed off cubicles by dominant herd members may stand for many extra hours. Stocking density limits and cubicle adequacy are key welfare levers in dairy housing.

What You Can Do

Support dairy welfare standards with lying time monitoring requirements
Choose dairy from farms with outdoor access or high welfare housing standards
Advocate for mandatory stocking density limits in dairy housing regulations
Fund research into cost-effective dairy housing improvements for lying time
