Tilapia is one of the most farmed fish globally, produced under highly variable welfare conditions from low-density ponds to intensive cage and tank systems.
Tilapia's tolerance for poor conditions is exploited to justify intensive production that falls far below what the species needs for positive welfare. Fish experiencing chronic crowding stress cannot express natural behaviours and suffer repeated social defeat. Better production standards are achievable and would significantly improve welfare.
