Horse and pony sales present welfare challenges through rapid ownership changes, inadequate assessment of health status and the pipeline to slaughter for some animals.
Rapid ownership changes disrupt equine social bonds and established feeding and management routines. Animals in poor condition entering sale are often in pain or distress during transport and holding. Pre-sale veterinary assessment would identify welfare problems but is not universally required.
