Long distance cattle transport causes significant welfare harm from crowding, exhaustion, hunger, thirst and disease stress over journeys that can last many hours.
Extended transport causes cumulative welfare harm - fatigue, dehydration, injury from falls and social stress in mixed unfamiliar groups. Calves exported live for veal production experience some of the worst transport welfare outcomes. Reducing journey times and improving rest stop provision are welfare priorities.
