Welfare Considerations

Traditional white veal production causes multiple simultaneous welfare harms. Calves are separated from their mothers at birth causing acute distress. They are then confined individually preventing social contact and normal movement. Iron deficiency from milk-only diets creates physical discomfort and behavioral abnormalities including compulsive licking of metal fixtures in search of minerals. These welfare costs are largely unnecessary given the availability of better production methods.

Refuse to purchase or order traditional white veal products
If consuming veal choose only rose veal from group-housed calves with iron-sufficient diets
Advocate for complete bans on veal crate confinement where not yet implemented
Reduce veal consumption entirely given the inherent welfare problems of its production
