Sun bears are small forest bears from Southeast Asia requiring complex vertical and substrate environments that simulate their forest home in captivity.
Sun bears in barren enclosures cannot express their complex foraging and climbing behaviours, leading to high rates of stereotypic swaying and pacing. Forest simulation enclosures with soil substrate, logs, climbing structures and hidden food reduce stereotypic behaviour significantly.
