Laboratory animal welfare has improved significantly through the 3Rs framework, but gaps remain particularly for invertebrates, fish and the most common laboratory species.
Laboratory animal welfare improvements driven by the 3Rs have reduced suffering in licenced research. However, regulatory incentives to use species outside the protected categories may undermine welfare standards for fish and invertebrates. Robust species-appropriate welfare standards across all research animals are needed.
