Boarding catteries represent a welfare challenge for cats who are highly territorial and stress-sensitive. Cattery design, management, and owner preparation all influence outcomes.
Boarding stress causes genuine suffering in many cats - reduced eating, hiding, excessive vocalisation, and immune suppression. Cattery design that provides full visual and olfactory separation from neighbouring cats, along with hiding opportunities and enrichment, significantly reduces stress. Some cats are so territory-dependent that boarding stress may be severe enough that home-based care is strongly preferable.
