Feral cats live at the boundary of companion and wild animals. Trap-Neuter-Return programmes and colony management aim to improve welfare while stabilising populations.
Feral cats live outside the welfare safety net of companion animals. Their lives involve reproductive stress, disease, territorial injury, and hardship. TNR addresses reproductive suffering but does not eliminate all hardship for adult cats. The welfare balance between managed colony life and euthanasia is genuinely difficult. Effective TNR requires systematic sterilisation of entire colonies to prevent immigration and population rebound.
