Gastrointestinal stasis is a life-threatening emergency in rabbits that occurs without warning. Understanding prevention and early recognition can save lives.
GI stasis causes severe abdominal pain and can kill within 24-48 hours without treatment. The stoic nature of rabbits means owners often don't recognise the emergency until the rabbit is critically ill. Any rabbit that stops eating, produces fewer droppings, or appears hunched requires same-day veterinary attention. Hay must form 80% of diet to maintain gut motility and prevent stasis.
