Pet snakes have complex husbandry requirements frequently unmet in captivity. Understanding their thermoregulatory, spatial, and behavioural needs improves welfare outcomes.
Pet snake welfare is routinely compromised by incorrect husbandry. Temperature gradients, humidity, substrate, hiding areas, and enclosure size all affect snake health and behaviour. Snakes are not low-maintenance pets despite their reputation. Inappropriate housing causes chronic stress, immune suppression, and disease. The exotic pet trade supplies snakes without adequate buyer education, creating systematic welfare failures.
