Companion Parrot Beak and Feather Disease: Welfare and Prevention

Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD) is a serious viral infection in parrots causing significant welfare harm. Prevention through testing and quarantine protects both individual birds and collections.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

PBFD causes progressive suffering as feathers fail to develop normally and the immune system collapses. Affected birds cannot regulate temperature, preen effectively, or exhibit normal social behaviours. Secondary infections cause additional suffering in immunocompromised birds. The welfare case for testing and quarantine is strong. Responsible breeders test all stock, but the trade in untested wild-caught and poorly monitored captive-bred birds continues to spread disease.
