Pigs are weaned much earlier in commercial production than in natural conditions. The welfare implications of early weaning are significant for both sow and piglets.
Premature weaning causes multiple simultaneous welfare challenges for piglets. Separation from the sow, change of diet, and mixing with unfamiliar pigs within days create acute distress. Post-weaning stress syndrome involves gut inflammatory responses, diarrhoea, and sometimes gastric ulceration. Later weaning, while reducing reproductive efficiency, produces more developmentally robust piglets with better immune status and lower antibiotic requirements.
