Millions of coral reef fish are collected for the ornamental trade annually. Collection, transport, and captive conditions cause significant welfare harm that is largely unregulated.
Marine ornamental fish welfare begins with collection and deteriorates through transport, wholesale, retail, and often inadequate home aquarium conditions. Cyanide-stunned fish suffer organ damage that contributes to delayed mortality. Transport stress is severe and poorly managed. The 'hobby' sustains demand for wild-caught animals that die rapidly, creating continuous harvest pressure. Captive-bred alternatives and better-informed purchasing can reduce harm.
