Thousands of greyhounds retire from racing each year. Understanding their welfare needs in retirement and the challenges of rehoming enables better outcomes for retired dogs.
Greyhound retirement welfare is a downstream consequence of the racing industry's throughput. Dogs that can no longer race face export, euthanasia, or lucky placement in limited rescue spaces. Retired greyhounds often require minimal rehabilitation - they are typically healthy, sociable, and house-trainable. The welfare gap exists in volume rather than in rehabilitation complexity. Stronger regulation requiring lifetime responsibility for registered dogs is needed.
