Pig Enrichment and Play: Positive Welfare in Commercial Systems

Play behaviour in pigs is a strong indicator of positive welfare. Understanding what promotes play helps design truly welfare-positive commercial systems.

Key Facts

Play behaviour peaks in young piglets but continues in well-managed older pigs
Social play including running, jumping, and jaw-wrestling indicates positive emotional states
Play is suppressed by crowding, illness, pain, and inadequate enrichment
Novel enrichment objects promote play better than permanent fixtures
Straw and rooting materials stimulate more varied play than hanging chains alone
Pigs show more play in natural systems with outdoor access and diverse environments

Welfare Considerations

Play is not a welfare luxury - it is a diagnostic indicator of positive mental state. Pigs in environments that permit play are experiencing something beyond mere absence of suffering. Commercial systems that eliminate play through crowding, bare floors, and impoverished enrichment are failing welfare in a way that audit tools focused only on negative indicators miss. Positive welfare requires active promotion of play through enrichment quality and environmental design.

What You Can Do

Support producers and schemes actively measuring and promoting positive welfare indicators
Choose pork from systems certified to standards requiring enrichment that promotes natural behaviour
Advocate for positive welfare indicators including play to be added to farm assurance assessments
