Coral reef ecosystems support enormous fish biodiversity. Climate and human pressures on reefs affect individual fish welfare through habitat loss, temperature stress, and chemical contamination.
Reef fish welfare is inextricable from reef health. Fish in degraded or bleached reef habitat experience habitat loss, food scarcity, and physiological stress from temperature and chemical exposure. Individual fish welfare cannot be addressed without addressing the ecosystem-level threats that determine habitat quality. Climate action is simultaneously the most impactful reef conservation and reef fish welfare intervention possible.
