Farmed salmon are exposed to boat engines, feeding machinery, and underwater noise pollution. Growing evidence suggests acoustic stress contributes to welfare compromise in sea cages.
Acoustic stress in farmed salmon is an emerging welfare concern. Fish are unable to escape noise sources in confined sea cages, meaning chronic exposure to loud machinery is unavoidable. Acoustic deterrent devices aimed at seal predators may cause unintended welfare harm to the fish they protect. Better understanding of the acoustic environment of sea cages and implementation of noise reduction measures would address a welfare dimension currently ignored in most certification standards.
