Guinea pigs are among the most commonly misunderstood companion animals. Their welfare is frequently compromised by inadequate housing, single housing, and lack of veterinary care.
Guinea pig welfare failures are systematic and widespread. The mismatch between typical pet industry provision (small cages, single animals) and actual welfare needs (large spaces, social groups) creates chronic suffering in millions of kept guinea pigs. Dental disease develops silently and causes prolonged pain before clinical signs appear. Veterinary care for guinea pigs requires exotic pet expertise that is inconsistently available. Comprehensive welfare reform in guinea pig husbandry guidance and regulation is urgently needed.
