Cheetahs are notoriously difficult to breed in captivity and have complex social and spatial needs that make zoo welfare particularly challenging.
Captive cheetahs frequently experience reproductive failure linked to chronic low-level stress from inadequate space, social isolation and environmental monotony. Positive welfare requires enrichment that triggers prey-seeking behaviour, appropriate social groupings and enclosures that allow high-speed bursts of locomotion even in modified form.
