Welfare Considerations

Salmon hatcheries involve welfare trade-offs. Fish are reared in densely crowded concrete raceways that restrict natural behavior and increase disease transmission risk. The welfare of hatchery fish is generally poor during rearing. After release, hatchery salmon may fare poorly in the wild having missed natural behavioral development. Yet hatcheries also prevent complete extinction of some runs and support commercial and subsistence fisheries.
