Livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) protect flocks and herds from predators but their own welfare requires careful attention to health, socialisation and working conditions.
The welfare of working livestock guardian dogs is often overlooked in discussions of farm animal welfare. LGDs that lack regular veterinary care, adequate nutrition and human social contact can suffer from preventable diseases and loneliness. Effective guardianship and good LGD welfare are complementary, not competing, goals.
