Horses are social animals and solitary housing causes significant psychological distress that manifests in stereotypies, elevated stress hormones and abnormal behaviour.
Solitary housing is one of the most significant preventable welfare harms for horses and ponies. Where full social housing is not possible, allowing at least visual and tactile contact with neighbouring horses substantially reduces stress. Companion animals such as goats have been used to reduce isolation stress but are not equivalent to equine companions.
