Thousands of greyhounds leave racing careers annually and their welfare during retirement and rehoming is a major concern for the industry and animal welfare advocates.
Greyhound retirement welfare depends on the culture and regulation of the racing industry. Greyhounds from poorly regulated environments may be abandoned, exported for racing in lower-welfare jurisdictions or destroyed. Strong industry accountability, traceability of all registered dogs and investment in retirement and rehoming infrastructure are essential welfare safeguards.
