Bit and bridle fit are increasingly recognised as significant contributors to horse welfare, with poor fit causing oral pain, head shaking and resistance in ridden horses.
Oral pain from ill-fitting bits and tight nosebands is a significant source of welfare harm in ridden horses that often goes unrecognised. Horses cannot verbally communicate discomfort and may be labelled as difficult or resistant rather than recognised as in pain. Regular assessment of bit fit, noseband tightness and oral health is part of responsible horse ownership and training.
