Cattle are social animals with complex dominance hierarchies and social bonds that affect welfare, productivity and behaviour in managed herds.
Social management is an underappreciated dimension of cattle welfare. Frequent regrouping in commercial systems creates chronic stress from repeated social instability. Stable group composition, adequate space to establish hierarchy without injury, and access to sufficient feed and resting resources for all individuals including lower-ranking animals are core welfare requirements.
