Tail docking of lambs is widely practiced to reduce blowfly strike risk but is a painful procedure with welfare trade-offs that vary by system and management intensity.
Tail docking without pain relief causes preventable acute suffering. The procedure may reduce blowfly strike risk in some systems, making it a welfare trade-off rather than purely harmful. However, provision of appropriate analgesia, minimum necessary docking length and restriction of docking to systems where the blowfly risk genuinely justifies it represent best practice. Longer retained tails are now recommended by many welfare bodies.
