Separation anxiety in dogs increased substantially following pandemic lockdowns, as dogs habituated to constant owner presence struggled with the return to normal schedules.
Separation anxiety causes significant distress for affected dogs who cannot understand or accept owner absence. Howling, destructive behaviour and elimination in the home reflect genuine panic rather than spite or disobedience. Treatment requires patience, consistency and often veterinary support. Prevention through habituation to alone time from early puppyhood is more effective than remedial treatment.
