Capybaras are the world's largest rodents, living in semi-aquatic social groups, and require water access and appropriate group management for good welfare in zoos.
Capybara welfare is dependent on group living and water access. Solitary capybaras are significantly stressed and frequently develop stereotypies or health problems. Pool size must allow submersion and swimming. Social groups should be stable to avoid disruption of established hierarchies. Their grazing needs require large grassland areas that most private keepers cannot adequately provide.
