Companion Animal Welfare: Grief and Loss in Dogs

Dogs experience grief-like responses following the loss of bonded companions or owners, with welfare implications for surviving animals that require owner understanding and support.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Canine bereavement is a genuine welfare concern that owners may be poorly prepared for. Dogs showing persistent reduced appetite, lethargy and searching behaviour require attentive management including maintenance of routine, additional gentle interaction and monitoring for signs of clinical depression. Allowing dogs to observe (but not necessarily approach) the body of a deceased companion may help with the transition.
