Precision livestock farming technologies including wearable sensors, cameras and AI analysis offer welfare benefits but also raise questions about privacy, data use and the limits of technological welfare management.
Precision livestock farming has genuine welfare potential but technology does not replace the skilled, empathetic stockperson who responds to animal signals. Technologies that generate alerts that are consistently ignored, or that create false security about animal welfare status, may actually harm welfare by reducing direct human observation. The ethical implementation of precision farming integrates technology as a tool to augment rather than replace good animal husbandry.
