Scientific evidence for fish pain and sentience has grown dramatically. Policy and practice are slowly catching up with the evidence base.
The scientific consensus on fish sentience has shifted dramatically over two decades. Evidence for nociception, aversion learning, and analgesic response is now robust. The policy lag behind this evidence represents an enormous ongoing welfare failure at scales almost incomprehensible - trillions of individuals per year. Accelerating policy catch-up is one of the highest-impact welfare advocacy priorities.
