Wolverines are wide-ranging predators with enormous home ranges. Zoo welfare requires creative large-space management and species-appropriate enrichment.
Wolverine welfare in captivity is inherently challenging given the extreme home range requirements of this wide-ranging species. No zoo exhibit can replicate the ecological experience of an animal that routinely travels 40 km in a day. Welfare management must focus on maximizing behavioral complexity through enrichment and minimizing monotony within unavoidably restricted space.
