Zoo Spectacled Bear Welfare and Foraging

Spectacled bears are the only bear species native to South America. Their welfare in zoos depends on complex foraging opportunities and appropriate thermal management.

Key Facts

Spectacled bears are the most threatened bear species in South America
They are primarily frugivores in the wild, requiring diverse fruit provision in captivity
Spectacled bears are semi-arboreal, requiring climbing structures for behavioral welfare
Unlike most bear species, they are not obligate hibernators but show seasonal activity changes
Zoo spectacled bear populations are managed through studbook coordination across institutions

Welfare Considerations

Spectacled bear welfare in zoos requires specialist knowledge of their frugivorous diet, climbing behavior, and non-hibernating nature. Facilities that replicate the foraging complexity of their Andean cloud forest habitat - with diverse fruits, vertical climbing space, and seasonal variation - provide substantially better welfare than those treating them as generic brown bears.
