Bit and bridle fit significantly affects horse welfare during ridden work. Ill-fitting equipment causes pain, behavioral evasion, and long-term soft tissue damage.
Bit and bridle welfare is a hidden but significant source of pain in ridden horses. Pain from poorly fitted equipment produces behavioral responses often misinterpreted as stubbornness, training problems, or disobedience. These horses are communicating discomfort in the only way available to them. Appropriate equipment fitting assessment should precede all training interventions for behavioral problems under saddle.
