Zoo Polar Bear Welfare and Climate

Polar bears face welfare challenges in captivity from inadequate cold, space, and cognitive stimulation. Their wild habitat is simultaneously threatened by climate change.

Key Facts

Wild polar bears range over sea ice areas of up to 300,000 km2 in search of ringed seals
Zoo polar bears have the highest rates of stereotypic pacing of any zoo species in some studies
Cold environments, swimming pools, and complex enrichment significantly reduce stereotypic behavior
Climate change threatens wild polar bear survival with ice-free summer Arctic periods increasing
Some wildlife experts question the welfare justification for polar bear captivity given space requirements

Welfare Considerations

Polar bear welfare in captivity is among the most ethically contested in zoology. The species' extreme space requirements, highly specialized feeding ecology, and cognitive complexity create welfare challenges that even excellent facilities struggle to meet. The conservation justification for captivity is complicated by the difficulty of maintaining wild-type behaviors and the scale of climate-driven wild habitat loss.

What You Can Do

Support climate action as the primary welfare intervention for wild polar bears
Evaluate zoo polar bear exhibits critically for space, cold provision, and enrichment complexity
Advocate for zoo accreditation bodies to address polar bear welfare standards honestly
Donate to Arctic sea ice conservation and climate action organizations
