Acromegaly from pituitary tumors causes insulin-resistant diabetes in cats. Recognition and treatment improve welfare for affected cats significantly.
Acromegaly welfare is a case where correct diagnosis transforms treatment success. Cats with acromegaly-related diabetes fail to respond adequately to insulin and are often euthanised as 'brittle diabetics' when the underlying pituitary tumor is treatable. Recognition of acromegaly as the diagnosis and access to radiotherapy enables dramatically better welfare outcomes.
