Dog Thunderstorm Anxiety Welfare and Treatment

Fear of thunderstorms is a common and often undertreated welfare problem in dogs that can cause significant suffering.

Key Facts

Thunderstorm phobia affects an estimated 15-30% of dogs to some degree
Dogs may respond to static electricity, barometric pressure, and dark skies before storms begin
Untreated fear often intensifies over successive storms without intervention
Behavioural modification, medication, and environmental management can all reduce fear
Pressure wraps and white noise machines provide relief for some individuals

Welfare Considerations

Thunderstorm phobia causes genuine acute suffering in affected dogs and can become a chronic welfare issue that affects quality of life during entire storm seasons. Many owners underestimate the distress their dogs experience or feel helpless to address it. Evidence-based treatment options are available and should be more widely promoted by veterinary professionals.

What You Can Do

Consult a veterinarian or certified behaviourist if your dog shows storm fear
Use desensitisation protocols before storm season begins where possible
Advocate for thunderstorm phobia to be treated as a serious welfare issue, not a minor quirk
