Livestock auction markets are a high-risk welfare environment for cattle due to unfamiliar conditions, social disruption, and handling stress.
Auction markets represent a welfare pinch-point in the beef and dairy cattle supply chain. The combination of transport stress, unfamiliar social environments, and often high-throughput handling creates significant welfare risk. Improving facility design, handler training, and inspection capacity at auction markets would have high impact given the large numbers of animals passing through these systems.
