Companion Animal Welfare

Companion Animal Emergency Preparedness Welfare

Emergency preparedness for companion animals is a welfare priority that is frequently overlooked until disaster strikes.

Key Facts

Animals are commonly separated from owners during evacuations due to lack of planning
Natural disasters including floods and wildfires create acute welfare emergencies for companion animals
Emergency supply kits for pets should include food, medication, and veterinary records
Microchipping dramatically improves reunion rates after disaster-related separation
Some emergency shelters still do not accommodate pets, creating barriers to owner evacuation

Welfare Considerations

Companion animal welfare during emergencies is dependent on owner preparedness. Animals separated from their owners in disaster contexts face acute welfare harms including starvation, dehydration, injury, and extreme stress. Simple preparedness steps including emergency supply preparation, microchipping, and knowing emergency accommodation options for pets can dramatically improve welfare outcomes in disaster situations.
