Outdoor pig systems can provide substantial welfare advantages over indoor systems when well managed.
Outdoor pig systems represent a genuine welfare improvement when managed competently. The opportunity to root, wallow in appropriate conditions, and experience natural light addresses fundamental pig motivational needs. However, the welfare premium of outdoor systems is not automatic - poor management, inadequate shelter, and predation exposure can create welfare problems absent from well-managed indoor systems. Management quality determines welfare quality.
