Separation anxiety is one of the most common and impactful welfare problems in companion dogs, with effective treatment options available.
Separation anxiety causes genuine and ongoing suffering for affected dogs during every episode of owner absence. The distress is not trivial - it represents acute anxiety in an animal for whom social connection is fundamental to wellbeing. Evidence-based treatment including behaviour modification and medication is highly effective but underused. Improving access to specialist behavioural support would substantially improve welfare for a large number of dogs.
