Dehorning and disbudding of cattle causes significant pain that has historically been managed inadequately in many production systems.
Dehorning and disbudding without adequate pain management represents unnecessary infliction of pain on cattle. Effective analgesic options are available and cost-effective relative to the welfare improvement they provide. Regulatory progress in some jurisdictions demonstrates that mandatory pain relief for dehorning is feasible and achievable. The remaining gap between best practice and standard practice represents a significant preventable welfare burden.
