Positive welfare in horses goes beyond absence of harm to assess genuine flourishing and positive emotional states.
Horse welfare assessment has traditionally focused on identifying and preventing harms. Positive welfare frameworks ask the additional question: are these animals thriving, experiencing positive emotions, and living lives that are genuinely worth living? Positive welfare indicators - playfulness, curious exploration, relaxed social engagement - are achievable in well-managed horses and should be explicit goals of good equine care.
