Zero-grazing systems that keep dairy cows permanently indoors raise significant welfare concerns around movement restriction, natural behaviour, and lameness.
Dairy cattle are motivated to graze and show positive affect indicators when given pasture access. Permanent confinement in cubicle sheds restricts natural movement patterns, prevents grazing behaviour cows are strongly motivated to perform, and increases lameness risk from hard flooring. While indoor systems offer some welfare benefits, the denial of pasture represents a significant welfare compromise that is increasingly questioned.
