Effective pain management for routine procedures on farm animals remains inconsistently applied despite good evidence that it reduces suffering and improves production outcomes.
The gap between available pain management tools and their on-farm application is a significant welfare concern. Veterinary research has established effective protocols for analgesic use at standard husbandry procedures, but cost sensitivity, lack of awareness, and convenience barriers result in millions of animals undergoing painful procedures without adequate pain relief. Prescribing frameworks that simplify access and farmer education are both needed.
