Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious and often fatal disease that causes extreme suffering in unvaccinated dogs, with vaccination being one of the most impactful welfare interventions available.
Parvovirus causes some of the most acute suffering seen in companion animal practice. Affected puppies experience severe dehydration, intense abdominal pain, and haemorrhage over 3-5 days before death or recovery. Treatment requires intensive hospitalisation with fluids, antibiotics, and antiemetics that most owners cannot afford. The entire disease burden is preventable with two doses of a highly effective, inexpensive vaccine.
