Farmed Duck Water Access Welfare

Domestic ducks are derived from mallards and retain strong motivation to immerse in water, making water access a critical welfare requirement poorly met in many commercial systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The denial of immersion water to ducks represents a significant welfare failure because it prevents the expression of a highly motivated natural behaviour and causes physical health problems in the process. Ducks without adequate water access develop painful eye and nasal conditions from the inability to clean these areas properly. The welfare cost is both behavioural - frustration of strongly motivated bathing behaviour - and physical - preventable chronic health problems.
