Zoo Animal Welfare

Zoo Flamingo Colony Welfare

Flamingos are highly social colonial birds whose zoo welfare depends fundamentally on large group sizes, appropriate social dynamics, and opportunity for display behaviour.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Flamingo welfare is uniquely dependent on the density and size of social groups. Unlike many zoo species, flamingos require genuinely large groups to trigger the social stimulation that drives normal display, breeding, and social behaviour. Small groups - below 20 individuals - are welfare-compromised by definition. Zoos maintaining flamingos in small numbers for visual appeal rather than welfare may be failing these animals despite providing otherwise adequate physical conditions.
