Weasels and stoats are predators that play important ecological roles in UK ecosystems and face welfare concerns from trapping, snaring, and secondary poisoning.
Stoats and weasels killed in poorly managed trapping programmes may suffer prolonged injury before death. Trap check intervals required by licence - a minimum of every 24 hours - still allow significant suffering for injured animals. Non-target capture in traps set for other species is a welfare concern. Secondary poisoning through prey species that have ingested rodenticide accumulates in mustelid predators that eat many small mammals daily.
